AC and DC Traction Power

Balfour Beatty Rail engineers and supplies complete AC power supply systems for traction power. Our recent AC power project for the Northeast Corridor between New Haven and Boston, which operates at 25 kV, 60 Hz, attests to our flexibility and knowhow in installing such systems.

We are also experts in systems design, installation, testing and commissioning for DC traction power. Balfour Beatty Rail provides new systems, renewals and upgrades on existing systems.

Our recent experience with DC traction power includes the Los Angeles County extension of the Metro Gold Line Eastside project. The work involved both 750 VDC traction power and the 15 KV auxiliary switchgear that provides primary and backup power to underground passenger stations.

Teams also installed two customer-provided traction power substations in Pasadena, Calif. The installation at one of these substations included an unusual run for the 750 VDC positive feeder cables: The team pulled these cables through two manholes before gaining access to the belly of a highway bridge. The cables exited the belly of the bridge at the center of the track for access to the feeder poles.
