Shoulder Ballast Cleaning
Shoulder ballast cleaning from
Balfour Beatty Rail, Inc. pays dividends in reduced maintenance costs
and improved performance. Sometimes it even pays for itself.
Ballast
fouling and the resulting loss of ballast section effectiveness
increase the need for surfacing. The loss of profile aggravates this
condition. This reduces lateral ballast resistance, increasing the
quantity of ballast required to maintain the section's lateral strength.
You
need an extra 176 cubic yards of ballast per mile to compensate for a
lateral resistance loss of 30 percent. Our shoulder ballast cleaning
crews work at speeds of up to three miles per hour under dry conditions.
We
distribute ballast evenly to each shoulder after cleaning (or as
specified). Our machinery regulates the contour, then brooms the tie
ends to finish up. A scarifier tooth breaks up mud seals from under the
ties, allowing proper drainage.
With our shoulder ballast
cleaning services, you get superior rail efficiency leading to
increased speed, safety and dependability.
