Alameda Corridor Project Picture

Alameda Corridor

Client/Owner: Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority
Project Start Date: April 2002 through April 2007 (start-up contract)
Project Completion Date: April 2007 through April 2012 (current contract with possible extension to April 2017)

Balfour Beatty Rail, Inc.'s contract for the Alameda Corridor maintenance, which runs through 2012, includes track, signal, communications and right-of-way maintenance.

Metroplex Corp., a Balfour Beatty company, built the trackwork for the Alameda Corridor freight expressway linking America's two busiest ports, Long Beach and Los Angeles, to the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe and Union Pacific rail yards near downtown Los Angeles.

The Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority managed the $2.5 billion project, which opened in April 2002 -- on time and on budget. The construction has reduced the travel time between the ports and rail yards from two hours to 45 minutes.

Metroplex's $60 million subcontract with the Tutor-Saliba/Slattery Joint Venture involved initially building 48,000 feet of storage tracks for Union Pacific to offset tracks being taken out to make way for the trench. The team also built a 33,000-foot bypass, two main tracks and a set-off track in the trench totaling 67,000 feet.
