UP Intermodal Yard
Client/Owner: Union Pacific Railroad
Project Start Date: October 2007
Project Completion Date: November 2008
The Houston office constructed 88,000 track feet of rail, along with 48
turnouts. The work allows primary contractor SpawGlass Contractors to
deliver the client a $120 million state-of-the-art intermodal rail
terminal alongside Interstate 35 in San Antonio. The project advances
the city's goal to establish itself as a NAFTA inland port. The
300-acre Union Pacific intermodal terminal will reduce truck traffic on
Interstate 10 through San Antonio and to Houston by giving trucks the
option of dropping off containers in San Antonio instead of Houston.
According to an economic impact analysis by Insight Research, the new
facility is expected to generate $2.48 billion in cumulative economic
impact for the area during the next 20
years.
