Balfour Beatty Rail Wins Double Honors for Safety
(JACKSONVILLE, FL) - The National Railroad Construction and Maintenance
Association (NRC) recently honored Balfour Beatty Rail, Inc. with two
safety awards, including the company's third consecutive Gold Award.
The honors were part of the 2009 NRC/RT&S/Commercial Insurance
Associates Safe Railroad Contractor of the Year Awards. The contest saw
46 railroad companies compete.
"Our people in the field have done an outstanding job in the area of safety," said Stanley Beaver,
Balfour Beatty Rail's safety and environmental director. "There's a
continual awareness on our project sites that we can't cut corners
where safety is concerned. Our Zero Harm program has helped keep people
mindful of their responsibilities to themselves and one another."
Balfour Beatty Rail's parent company, Balfour Beatty plc, launched its internal
Zero Harm safety program around the globe in 2008 with the goal of
eliminating the risk of serious harm caused by work.
The contest judges gave Balfour Beatty Rail a Gold Award for the 300-plus employee
category, which the company also won in 2008 and 2007. The Gillette,
WY, division received a Silver Award in the 39-99 employee category.
The winning companies are those that score highest on NRC safety criteria
for safety programs, workers' compensation experience, OSHA compliance
and roadway worker protection training.
"The competition is
getting tougher every year, and the judges have once again reported
that the overall quality of submissions is rising," said Chuck Baker,
NRC president, in a written statement. "This reflects very well on the
participating contractors, and speaks to the fact that the railroad
contracting industry is safe and getting safer."
